Violet Defense

Exploring visual themes for a UV disinfection startup.

Violet Defense

Highlights

  • Ascender produced a series of visualizations to show how installed and mobile UV solutions operate in an environment.
  • Ascender proposed a new visual theme for the Violet Defense brand based on linear and geometric forms, representing the behavior of light.
  • Individual products and sub-brands could be assigned a unique visual identity based on a dynamically-generated design system.

Violet Defense develops Ultraviolet (UV) light technology to produce a wide variety of disinfection solutions. Founded in 2012, Violet Defense discovered and patented a unique method of combining UV light with a coated lens, resulting in an ultra-efficient and portable deployment mechanism. Violet Defense technology is used to disinfect viruses and bacteria by first responders, schools, athletic facilities, law enforcement, public transit, hotels, and more, around the globe.

The Challenge

The coronavirus pandemic sparked a renewed interest in providing disinfection solutions. With nearly a decade of research and development as a foundation, Violet Defense recognized an opportunity to expand the brand and address the rapidly-developing global disaster. Ascender worked with Violet Defense’s product development and incubator teams to explore new design themes for the brand and help visualize new concepts for the products overall.

Design

Ascender kicked off the design process by pulling from Violet Defense’s existing key messaging to illustrate a variety of visual approaches. A bold, new color scheme was introduced, using the extreme ends of the light spectrum as inspiration.

Illustrating coverage ranges and optimal installation zones for a cleaning solution that works invisibly was a core challenge for the Violet Defense sales efforts. Ascender produced a series of visualizations to show how installed and mobile UV solutions operate in an environment.

Violet Defense needed a logo update to better represent the expanding range of applications for their UV technology. Ascender proposed a new visual theme based on linear and geometric forms, representing the behavior of light.

A radial symbol could be generated dynamically, using a set of rules to determine color, line length, and movement. With this approach, individual products and sub-brands could be assigned a unique visual identity based on the core visual theme.

We were always energized when Ascender came back with fresh and unexpected directions.
